Joint Pain

Most often, joint pain occurs in the form of arthritis, a chronic degenerative health issue that involves both the joints and bones. This condition results from inflamed joints and can be quite painful. While at times, this illness is linked to age, it really can occur at any time in a person’s life.

What is Arthritis?

It’s a chronic disease, which causes swelling, stiffness, and severe pain in the joints. Sometimes, the condition can also alter a patient’s basic skeletal structure and decrease their range of motion. The two main types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).

Joints have a tissue called “cartilage”. It provides a cushion for connecting joints, with its main function being to protect the joint and act as a “shock absorber”. Over time, a person’s cartilage decreases and wears down, thus, increasing the friction between the joints and causing pain. OA is a result of this “wear and tear”, while RA is an autoimmune disorder. With RA patients, their own immune system is “attacking” the cartilage for no real reason. With OA, most patients are older, while with RA, a patient can be any age.
